Buy Wedding Special
Every mother in Rajasthan has said some version of this to her daughter before the wedding.
We just wrote it down.
A Letter to the Bride
Beta,
The list has started. Your phone is full of photos. Everyone has an opinion about what you should wear. So before you buy anything, sit with me for a few minutes.
Before you buy anything
Do not start with the clothes. Start with the days.
Make a note of all the functions. Beside each of these, mention whether it is for the day or night time. After this mention the people attending the function. Open up your shop only after this.
Wedding is not a single dress. Weddings consist of seven to eight dresses. You will feel the pinch of spending a lot on the first day later on as well.
For your mehendi and haldi
These are the days you will sit on the floor, laugh, cry a little and get haldi on everything.
So do not wear silk. Wear something light. Kota Doria or cotton. A yellow leheriya for haldi. A green bandhani or something with little mirrors for mehendi.
Choose something you will not worry about. Nobody remembers a stain. They remember if you were happy.
For your sangeet
You will dance. I know you will, even if you say you won't.
Take a light lehenga in georgette or organza. Rani, orange, a bright blue. Let it swing when you turn. Heavy work looks lovely standing still and terrible when you are tired at midnight.
For the day of your pheras
This is the one day to wear the good one.
Color: Red or Maroon.
Material: Gaji Silk.
Bandhani is done by hand and that type wherein you can even see the dots from the back side of the cloth. The border and the chunri are done with Gota Patti.
In our families, many brides wear a gharchola for the pheras. The little boxes of zari with bandhani inside. Your nani wore one. I wore one. It is not a rule. But when you see yourself in the mirror, you will understand why we all did.
And please, check the weight before the day. You will sit for hours. Walk around the house in it once.
For your reception
By now you will be tired, so let the clothes do the work.
A shiny fabric - silk or organza. In wine, dark pink or soft gold. Mirror work or cutdana embroidery which catches the lights of the corridor. Make sure your jewellery is not as heavy as your pheras. You have already worked hard enough.
Post-marriage life
No one tells you about this part. Even after the wedding, you have to continue dressing every day in a new house, in front of new people.
Choose four or five beautiful bandhani and Banarasi sarees. In red, rani or green. Simple enough for morning prayers but elegant enough if your relatives pay you a visit. This is the clothing you will actually use.
And one last thing
Keep your wedding outfit well. Dry clean it once, wrap it in soft cotton, never plastic. Open it every few months and fold it a new way.
One day your daughter will want to wear it. Make sure it is ready for her.
With all my love, Maa
For Everyone Else at the Wedding
The mother of the bride or groom. Rich, but a little quieter than the bride. A heavy Banarasi or gota patti saree in maroon, wine or deep green. Silk that holds its shape through a long day of greeting guests.
The sisters and bhabhis. This is where the colour lives. Bright lehengas, mirror work, pieces that move. Picking one colour family together looks beautiful in photos.
The guests. Skip red on the wedding day. A bandhani or leheriya saree in pink, green or yellow is always right.
