Patola Dupatta

Patola Dupatta

There is a saying in Gujarat about the patola. This says that one day it may rip, but its colors will never fade.

This is how much faith people have in this design.

Red and green. Elephants, parrots, flowers and little dancing women, all arranged in perfect order. Once you see a patola pattern, you will recognize it everywhere.

This page has our patola dupattas. Easy to wear, easy to match, and priced so you can actually buy one.

What is Patola

Patola originates from Patan in the state of Gujarat in India. One particular family has been making it for the last nine hundred years.

It is not printed. It is woven.

Here comes the fascinating thing. Before any thread is placed on the loom, the threads themselves are tied and dyed. The person tying the thread ties a small portion of the thread, dyes it, then unties the knots, re-ties and re-dyes. The process is repeated until the thread holds within itself the colors of the ultimate pattern.

Only then the weaving begins. Even if one thread moves slightly, the elephant will be distorted.

This is called double ikat. Both the length threads and the width threads are dyed this way. Very few places in the world still do it.

Why Real Patan Patola Costs So Much

A genuine Patan patola saree can take six months to a year to create.

In one loom, there are two persons weaving. They can weave just a few inches in one whole day.

For this reason, a genuine Patan patola saree can cost lakhs of rupees. They are kept for many years by families and given to their daughters.

The other type of Patan patola saree is the single ikat. This is woven in Rajkot where only the width threads are tie-dyed.

What We Sell in This Collection

We have nothing to hide from you.

Dupattas featured here are dupattas in patola design. They feature the patola design, the traditional motifs, and the bright red and green colors. But they are not hand woven Patan double ikat since they cost lakhs and nobody wears them as dupattas.

Here you will have a product that looks and feels like patola but that you can easily wear to your office, pooja, or wedding ceremony without any doubts about its price.

If you need the real Patan hand woven patola, then we will give you the honest answer that you will not find that here. But if you need the patola design in your wardrobe, then you should definitely take a look at our collection.

The Motifs and What They Mean

Patola designs follow a pattern. Every form has a name and its significance.

Hathi Elephant. Symbolizes strength and good fortune. This is the most popular patola design.

Popat: Parrot. Represents love. Green parrots are very old designs in a row.

Nari:  Dancing girl. Design for weddings.

Phulwadi: Flower Garden. Smaller flowers throughout the piece.

Narikunjar: Woman and Elephants. This is the most elaborate and grand design used in bridal wear.

The next time you put on your dupatta, you will know what you are wearing.

The Colours

Patola colours are bold and they do not hide.

Red with green is the classic pair. You will also see yellow, black, white and maroon.

These colours are strong, so keep the rest of your outfit plain. A patola dupatta on a plain black kurta or a plain cream suit looks complete on its own.

Fabrics in This Collection

Cotton is light and soft. Suitable for day to day use, in office and during summers. Cotton silk patola dupatta would be the most convenient to begin with.

Cotton silk has slight shine and a bit more weight. Ideal for occasions and family functions.

Silk provides rich appearance. Best suited for weddings and other important occasions.

If it is your first patola dupatta then go for cotton one. You will wear it much more frequently than you think.

Size

The majority of our dupattas measure around 2.25 to 2.30 meters in length and 42 to 44 inches wide. The exact measurement is mentioned on each individual product page.

Each item here is one dupatta. It does not come with a suit or a kurta.

How to Wear It

With a plain kurta: The safest and the best. Let the dupatta do the talking.

With a plain saree: Fold it thin and use it as a shoulder drape for a fresh look.

With a plain lehenga or skirt: Use it as the odhni.

With jeans and a kurti: It works and many college girls wear it this way.

For jewellery, oxidised silver goes very well with red and green. Gold also works for wedding functions. Keep it light. The dupatta is already the main thing.

When to Wear It

Weddings and Sangeets.

Silk Patola worn on top of a simple attire.

Navratri and Garba.

Red and Green colored Patola worn during these nine days.

Diwali, Teej and Family Pujas.

The most traditional choice for festivals.

Office and College.

A cotton Patola Dupatta on top of a simple Kurta gives an elegant look.

For gifting.

Best choice irrespective of age and size.

How to Take Care of It

Cotton dupattas should be washed alone in cold water during the first wash. Some strong colors can bleed a little during the first wash; that is quite normal.

In case of silk and cotton silk dupattas, dry cleaning is recommended.

Avoid using bleach or harsh detergent.

Dry in shade. Strong sunlight can fade the bright colors.

Iron in medium temperature. If the dupatta has some zari work, iron it with the inside side facing up.

Fold it in a cotton bag and do not keep it in plastic bags for long periods.

Delivery

In stock pieces ship in 2 to 3 working days.

Pre order pieces are made after you order. Most take 3 to 7 working days. The exact time is written on each product page.

Shipping is free inside India on orders above Rs. 499.

We also send orders to other countries. The charge depends on where you are.
