What Makes a Good Blouse

Three things and they all happen before you see the design.

Fitting at the shoulder. If it’s not spot on, the sleeve will be pulled and the armhole will chafe. There’s nothing you can do about it after that.

Lining. A well-made blouse is lined appropriately and the lining feels nice on your skin. Thinner blouses that are unlined are obviously cheap looking in bright lights and feel it after an hour or two.

Inside finishing. Turn a blouse inside out. It will tell you more than the outside ever will. Clean, flat seams, no stray threads. We inspect each blouse for this before it leaves us.

A good finishing doesn’t stand out. The bad one does and mostly halfway through a function.

You place an order for the size you want, and they arrive sewn for you to be able to wear without going to any tailor. You don't have to make another trip and you save yourself from any delay as your marriage day draws near.

We always leave some fabric allowance inside the side seams of most of our items, which means that when adjustments are necessary, your tailor can easily do so without having to tamper with the design.

Getting Your Size Right

This is where people usually go wrong, so read it carefully.

Don’t measure your body. Instead, take four measurements from a blouse that you like.

First, lay it out on a bed and take these four measurements:

Bust – measure across the fullest area of the bust and multiply the measurement by two.

Shoulder – from one shoulder seam to another, across the back.

Length – from the shoulder seam to the hem.

Sleeve – from the shoulder seam to the tip of the sleeve.

Now, compare them to the chart that you see on the product page.

If you are in-between two sizes, choose the bigger one. It’s easy to adjust a blouse in just 10 minutes, but not to increase its size.

Fabrics

Cotton Silk is what we use most often. Has soft sheen to it, shape retention ability, and doesn’t give a hot feel. Perfect for all occasions.

Silk fabric for marriages and heavy sarees.

Cotton for day-to-day and summer fabrics.

Georgette and Chiffon for softer feel.

The type of fabric is a bigger concern than anyone would think. Stiffer fabric results in blouse standing away from the body while soft fabric gives it cling effect. This is where cotton silk comes into play.

Matching the Blouse to the Saree

Two safe choices and one that requires boldness.

Matching. Wear a blouse in the same shade as the color scheme of the saree border. It never fails.

Contrast. Pair a yellow blouse with a rani saree or a green blouse with red. This is the traditional Rajasthani style that makes the most beautiful pictures.

Gold or cream. You can wear a gold blouse under any bandhani or leheriya saree. If you have to buy just one additional blouse this year, this should be it.

One last tip. When your saree is heavily worked all over, go for a simple blouse. If your saree is a plain one, put the work in the blouse. This is the most common mistake people make.

Taking Care of It

Cotton and Cotton silk should be hand washed in cold water with a mild detergent.

In case of blouses having aari tari, gota, mirror work or sequins, dry cleaning is the only option because water weakens the thread in which the work is done.

It should never be wrung when it has work.

Press the water out without twisting it.

Hang it in shade to dry as sunlight may cause fading.

Ironing should be done inside out with a cotton cloth covering the work.

Do not pack it in drawers.

 It is hand embroidery done using a small hooked needle, stitch by stitch. It creates a beautiful raised embroidery with an elegant finish.

How do I wash the saree?
